October - The Illustrated House

17 - 29 October 2011

THE ILLUSTRATED HOUSE is an exhibition of new work produced by Sophie Elm, the creative talent behind Jeff Josephine Designs. It centres on the theme of classic British domestic architecture, as well as a little look at what lies within. The exhibition contains a selection of ceramics, limited edition prints, drawings, and mini painted delights.

Sophie is fascinated by a romanticised image of a nostalgic Britain, one that has generally been lost and today seems unattainable due to the urban and fast paced world we live in. This fascination began at an early age. Growing up in a little village in the North Yorkshire countryside, she was surrounded by this ‘older’ England. It is here where she started to notice the British obsession with the ‘Home and Garden’.

Later, she discovered the delights of notable British design movements and designers such as The Bloomsbury Group, Arts and Crafts, Edward Bawden and the Festival of Britain. All of who revel in traditional techniques and British culture. Traditional Scandinavian design is also a strong influence in her use of colour and pattern making.

Sophie is an illustrator, designer, pattern maker and typographer. She uses a variety of image making techniques to attain her artistic goals such as, ceramic painting, printmaking and model making. It is with a simplistic naivety, seen through her use of colour and pattern making, that brings a contemporary twist to an otherwise traditional subject matter.

Sophie graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Illustration. Since graduating she has illustrated two children’s books for Serafina Press, as well as undertaking many commissions of ceramic and paper based pieces. She has produced work for various collaborative exhibitions, as well as designing her own range of ceramics, limited edition artist prints, digital prints and greetings cards, all of which are sold in various galleries throughout the UK. She is currently living and working in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
