Dorothy has had a passion for textiles from a very young age, and she now has six decades of experience behind her. Dorothy says her grandmother and sewing teacher first inspired her. She trained at the West of England College of Art in Bristol and studied fashion and embroidery before completing a post-graduate course at Birmingham College of Art.
After training she began a fascinating career in fashion, securing a job with high-end British fashion salon Bellville Sassoon, noted for its glamorous and expensive clothing.
"I was designing the embroidery for the Bellville Sassoon dresses. It was all done by hand and most of the garments were for the young royals such as Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Kent,"
explains Dorothy, Bellville Sassoon was also the most prolific of Princess Diana's early designers.
Over the years, Dorothy has worked with hand weavers in North East Thailand and continues to visit and work with Lao People's Democratic Republic. More recently she has been involved with a group of silk and cotton weavers in Laos, who she visits for five to six weeks at a time.
Dorothy joined the original Brewery Arts over 20 years ago, and she has had a textile studio here ever since.
