Cut & Fold
7th November - 3rd January
Our Christmas show this year is an exploration of art made in paper. This versatile and inexpensive material can be used in quirky and subversive ways, and in these thrifty times it is exciting to demonstrate that great art can be made from humble materials.
The collection of work by contemporary makers includes folded paper, paper cuts, collage, papier mache, origami, paper sculpture and even wallpaper.
Paper is an ancient medium and artists today use it as an expressive material. A few deft cuts and folds and a flat sheet of paper is transformed into a piece of sculpture. Unwanted paper is recycled and given a new lease of life. Beautiful 3D objects and structures are made from paper pulp.
Cut & Fold demonstrates some of the processes and skills involved in making art from paper. Large and small, there’s something for everybody, from giant paper installations to tiny paper corsages. Come and see, be amazed by the potential of paper.
Richard Sweeney, one of our participating artists, has used the preview card to design a modular sculpture. Why not leave your 'mark' in the gallery by adding to the sculpture.
This exhibition has been specially curated for New Brewery Arts and includes work by internationally renowned artists from the USA, Japan, Holland and France as well as our own UK talent:
Luis Acosta, Claire Brewster, Tracey Bush, Sarah Cant, Jennifer Collier, Beatrice Coron, Magie Hollingworth, Elisabeth Lecourt, Hannah Lobley, Miriam Londono, Jayme McGowan, Helen Musselwhite, Ingrid Siliakus, Gerlof Smit, Justine Smith, Ferry Staverman, Susan Stockwell, Richard Sweeney, Thurle Wright, Kumoi Yajima
