David Boardman

25 July to 7 August

Derby Day by David BoardmanDavid was born in Leicester in 1973 but spent his formative years growing up in Northumberland. He developed a love of drawing and painting at a very early age, inheriting his artistic skills from his grandfather, a renowned Cheshire painter.

After school he enrolled in an Art and Design foundation course at Newcastle-Upon–Tyne College where he developed his painting and design skills whilst cultivating a passion for modern art. After collecting his diploma, he won a place at Manchester Metropolitan University where he studied Illustration, collecting his degree in 1995.

Upon leaving university, David moved to Knutsford, Cheshire, Passion II by David Boardmanwhere he has lived ever since. After spending several years pursuing a career in commercial illustration, and having had considerable success in this field, he decided to concentrate on his own work, producing fine art canvases. After many commissions, he finally undertook his first one-man exhibition in 2004. This was swiftly followed by a second exhibition in March 2005 – both of which were hugely successful, introducing his work to a wider audience and garnering great praise.

Since then, David has continued to exhibit throughout the northwest region, including The Stockport Art Gallery and the renowned Wendy Levy Gallery in Didsbury, Manchester. He has also been commissioned by Lola Cars International, the race car giant, to produce a major piece for their newly renovated headquarters in Cambridgeshire.

Artist statement

A desire to represent on canvas the beauty of movement in all its myriad forms is the chief inspiration for my painting. Attempts to convey the intangible in two dimensions present intriguing problems which in the solving, produce what I hope are, dynamic, exciting images.

Firedance II by David BoardmanFollowing on from the example of ‘Futurist’ painters such as Severini, Duchamp and Malevich, the use of sequential photography has helped me in my painting to deconstruct what the human eye takes for granted everyday.

Inspired by my graphic design/illustration background, I have also introduced text into the fabric of my work. Whilst acting as a spacial device within the composition, it also has the effect of focusing the viewers mind on the subject matter or indeed in some cases drawing it away, providing cryptic juxtapositions. The use of text also betrays the influence of Pop Art on my painting. This is also evident in the use of strong, primary colouring.

I have tended to use the more extreme, dynamic forms of movement as my subject matter. Sporting endeavour and the rhythm of the dance are notable examples of subjects which create arresting images, whilst also providing an emotional hook for the viewer.
