Martha Van Der Laan
Martha runs sewing classes and textile workshops in Stroud and Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, at the edge of the Cotswold in a beautiful wooden Sewing Shed.
An experienced teacher and workshop leader, Martha moved to England in 1996 to do a degree in textile design at Bristol. Martha was 36 when she finished her studies and made textiles, scarfs and other gifts for shops and galleries around Bristol.
"What I love about textiles is that it is flexible, fluid. It's easy to work with and therefore you can combine it with different things, work in 2D or 3D – it just has endless possibilities. At the moment I am exploring by mixing textiles with wood, rubber and metal. I love the tension between the softness of the textiles and the hardness of the metal or wood," she explains.
