The Radcliffe Trust: Small Grants in Support of Crafts

The Radcliffe Trust provides small grants in support of Crafts and Music, particularly in the field of Classical music. Crafts are broadly defined, including building conservation skills, rural skills and traditional creative craft skills. In the area of crafts the main objective is the support of craft training among young people both at apprenticeship and postgraduate levels. For other craft grants the Trustees' main objective is to achieve a standard of excellence in crafts related particularly to conservation.

The majority of grants awarded are for amounts between £1,000 - £5,000.

During the year 2008 grants totaling £282,355 were made by the Trust.

The Pilgrim Trust

The Pilgrim Trust supports projects that come under the four main headings of social welfare, art and learning, preservation and places of worship. The Pilgrim Trust gave away approximately £2 million in 2008 the average size of grant given in 2008 was £23, 500 but, nearly half of grants were for £20,000 and under. There is a small grants fund for applications of £5000 or less and a large grants fund; from which the average size grant being £20,000.

The Trustees normally meet in January, April, July and October. Applications and supporting information must be received at least 6 weeks prior to the meetings.

Small Retailers Fund to Secure Premises

Small retailers will be able to apply for funding to help secure their premises and protect them from crime under a scheme announced by the Home Office. As part of the Retail Crime Action Plan (RCAP), a £5 million fund will be available to small firms in 50 priority areas across the UK.

Business owners will be able to apply for up to £3,000 to purchase equipment such as alarms or security grills. The RCAP also includes a risk assessment tool for firms, where owners can complete an online questionnaire to identify how they can reduce the risk of crime.

Fidelio Charitable Trust

Fidelio welcomes applications for grants in support of the arts, in particular the dramatic and operatic arts, music, speech and dance. Institutions, colleges, arts festivals and other arts organisations in the United Kingdom, may seek financial support for individuals or groups of exceptional ability, whom they have been responsible for selecting, to enable them to:

 

  • receive special tuition or coaching (e.g. in the case of musicians to attend masterclasses);
  • participate in external competitions;
  • be supported for a specially arranged performance;
  • receive support for a special publication, musical composition or work of art.

 

Applications from individuals or groups seeking support for them will not be accepted.

Baring Foundation

The Baring Foundation has announced that the programme will in 2010 focus on supporting arts organisations working with older people. A total of £3 million will be made available through the Arts programme through five funding rounds. The Arts programme 2010 will open for application at the end of September 2009 and the first grants will be made in June 2010.

Sustain: Arts Council England's Response to the Impact of the Recession on Arts Organisations

Sustain, Arts Council England's response to the impact of the recession on arts organisations is now open to application. Sustain provides additional financial and technical support, over and above ACE's existing funding programmes, and will be made available to organisations to help them maintain their artistic, financial and organisational viability during the recession and implement essential changes to ensure their long-term sustainability.

There is no closing deadline for applications, the programme has a budget of £40 million.

Permeate - A New Programme from Arts Council England, South East

Permeate aims to influence the make up of the visual arts workforce to make it more reflective of the diversity of British society and the UK workforce. There is a target of at least 6 fellowships. Fellowships must be hosted by organisations which are either visual arts based, or which use visual arts in their work (this could include community organisations, arts centres and melas for example). Fellowships can start at any time from June 2009 but must all finish by March 2011. Fellowships can vary in length from 3 months upwards, and could be full or part time.

The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation

The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation aims to improve the quality of life particularly of those in need. Grants range in size from £250,000 down to less than £1,000, although most grants will be for less than £10,000. The grants can be used for capital projects, endowments, scholarship funds, research programmes and research funding.

The Foundation publishes very brief guidelines for applicants and there is no application form. To apply, write to the Director giving details of your charity and its objectives, the need and purpose of your project and how much it will cost, the size of grant requested, how much has already been raised and from whom, and how you plan to raise the shortfall. Include annual report and accounts and any other documentation you feel will help to support your appeal.

Applications are considered regularly. The catchment area is England and Wales.

The Charles Hayward Foundation

The Charles Hayward Foundation predominantly funds capital costs and occasionally, project funding may be offered for start-up or development activities where these are not part of the on-going revenue requirement of the organisation. Projects that are preventative or provide early intervention and whose area of impact is at the community and neighbourhood level are preferred. The Foundation has the following current categories: heritage and conservation; criminal justice; hospices; older people; overseas; small grant schemes of up to £5,000.
