This 4-day letter carving course is suitable for all levels – including beginners. Content will include learning/practising the technique of ‘V’ incising letters in stone and slate, basic guidance on drawing and spacing letters, and the process offsetting out a brief inscription for carving. More experienced carvers may fine-tune carving, as required, and obtain input with drawn lettering and the design of inscriptions.

What you will need:Stone/slate will be available for purchase on the course, but you are welcome to bring your own stone/slate, there will not however, be facilities for cutting up stone. Welsh slate, greenslate, York stone, Portland stone are some of the recommended types for letter carving. Letter carving chisels, mallets, easels, goggles, and masks will be provided for the course, but you can bring your own tools if you already have them.
