Howard Phelps Bursary
What is the Bursary and who is it for?
The bursary scheme offers individuals the opportunity to apply to go on a New Brewery Arts course or workshop at a reduced cost. It is aimed at individuals who want to attend a course or workshop at New Brewery Arts for their personal development or to improve existing or new artistic skills or to help with professional development but who are prevented from doing so because of the costs.
The Howard Phelps Bursary has been made possible through the legacy of Howard Phelps and is supported by The David Thomas Trust. The legacy was left to New Brewery Arts to help the charity support artistic development.
About Howard Phelps
Howard Phelps was the first Chair of Trustees of Brewery Arts having orchestrated the amalgamation of Cirencester Workshops and The Niccol Centre to form the Brewery Arts Charity in 1989. It was under his leadership that the campaign for the redevelopment of the centre was initiated, resulting in our beautifully refurbished buildings. He remained dedicated to the charity and was Honorary President of the New Brewery Arts until his death in 2011.
Howard Phelps was a board director of British Airways and P&O. Born in Gloucester and educated at Durham University, in later life he dedicated much of his time and energy to education. He was chairman of governors at Cirencester College, Rendcombe College and became chair of the Association of Colleges in addition to his role as chair of trustees of Brewery Arts.
