Light and dark is all around us but do how do we harness this into a drawing? We will be looking at how to create what is called ‘value’ in our drawing.

Cross hatching will be used to build up areas of light and shade in order to create depth and atmosphere. We will also look at how to erase areas of drawing to soften and highlight. To help understand the importance of value to any piece of artwork we will look at the example of one artist whose entire working practice is based on this principle to learn how using light and dark can become the basis of our own practice.
