A vibrant course in Mexican folk art for anyone who loves colour and would like to have a go at some interesting crafting techniques. Brought to you by Christine Mumford who has lived and worked in Mexico and is passionate about the culture.

Week 1: Inspired by the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo produce your own mixed media portrait using collage, paint, pens and embellishments. You will need to bring a portrait photograph of your choosing to work from.

Week 2: “Papel Picado” is the art of cutting tissue paper to make colourful banners.Working from Mexican templates you will learn how to make your own paper cut banner.

Week 3: Using felt work, you will make a colourful Mexican themed decorative hanging.

Week 4: “Hojalata” is an ancient tin work craft still produced by hand today. You will cut, hammer and punch aluminium sheet to make a figure, heart or frame of your choosing and embellish with colour, glitter, beads and mirrors.

Weeks 5 and 6: “Cartoneria” or papier-mâché sculpting is a popular handcraft developed in central Mexico in the 17th century. You will make an articulated Mexican doll from paper pulp which dries to a very hard finish. When dry it is lightly sanded to give the appearance of porcelain, assembled and painted.

Weeks 7 and 8: During these sessions you will design and produce your own silk painting influenced by traditional Mexican designs.

Weeks 9 and 10: To celebrate the end of the course what better way than to do it the 'Mexican' way where at any celebration you will see a 'Piñata'. We will have fun making your own with papier-mâché, coloured crepe and tissue paper and any amount of glitter and sequins. You will have a bold statement piece to keep or fill with sweets and smash at a party as they do in Mexico!
