Join artist Yean Teo on this day workshop to learn the craft of Chinese brushstroke watercolour painting.
In this workshop, Yean with introduce the history, philosophy and materials of Chinese brush painting, also known as Chinese watercolour. She will teach traditional techniques and make the process approachable through practical, step-by-step guidance.
This workshop will focus on capturing the essence of nature, flowers, birds and landscapes through expressive brushwork. You will learn how to prepare and select brushes, ink and rice paper, and Yean will demonstrate key techniques that show how a few well-placed strokes can convey a subject’s spirit, movement and form.
During the course of the workshop you will have hands-on practice with personalised feedback throughout the day. You will explore both traditional and contemporary approaches, completing your own finished paintings to take home.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Meet Your Tutor - Yean Teo
Yean Teo is a practicing artist and experienced tutor specialising in the traditional disciplines of Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy, alongside oil painting and printmaking. Currently an associate tutor at West Dean College and Marlborough College Summer School, Yean brings a wealth of technical expertise and a patient, methodical approach to her workshops.
Her teaching focuses on the "Four Treasures" (brush, ink, paper, and ink stone) and the foundational strokes that form the basis of this ancient art form. Yean is passionate about making Chinese painting accessible to all levels, guiding students through the rhythmic, meditative process of capturing the essence of a subject, whether botanical or landscape with spontaneity and precision. Her workshops are designed to be a sanctuary for creativity, where students can explore the balance of ink and wash while developing their own unique artistic voice.
