Emily Hurst is a milliner, designer, maker and craftsperson with a passion for the heritage craft of straw work. She is dedicated to preserving and reimagining critically endangered traditional straw techniques such as plaiting, weaving and Swiss decoration, and elevating them to align with the contemporary fashion world.
These skills are primarily translated into hats and headwear, but Emily continues to explore the potential of the materials and techniques she uses, and is expanding the scope of her crafts into other accessories and homewares.
In 2024, Emily was accepted into the inaugural cohort of The CHANEL and The King’s Foundation Metier D’arts Millinery Fellowship in partnership with Le19m, a pioneer program in the conservation of hat making within the UK. This included formal millinery training in a range of materials and introduced Emily to the 17 Guinea Straw Machine, a staple of the heritage straw hat industry which dates back to the late 1800s. These machines are now a primary piece of equipment in her practice.
Since the fellowship, Emily has been awarded The 2025 King’s Foundation Emerging Talent Award, and was the inaugural recipient of the annual Royal Ascot millinery bursary in collaboration with The King’s Foundation for her artistry and dedication to reviving the craft.
