Join fibre artist Sarah Richards on this day workshop and create your own trio of characterful Christmas robins, ready to perch amongst the branches of your festive tree or decorate your home.

You'll begin by learning how to work from a template and create a firm structure for the body of your robin. Step by step, you'll build up the shape before adding the distinctive colours, wings and tail that bring each little bird to life.

Once your robins have taken shape, you'll turn your attention to their character and personality. Explore different ways to finish, adorn and display your decorations, with a selection of festive materials including bells and greenery to inspire you. Each robin will be unique, with plenty of opportunity to add your own creative details.

You'll be guided throughout the making process, learning how to create a strong structure, work accurately from a template and add the small details that give your finished decorations their charm.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have created your own trio of sweet Christmas robin decorations to take home and enjoy. You'll also receive a take-home kit with materials to continue making, so you can put your new skills into practice and add more handmade robins to your festive flock.

Meet Your Tutor - Sarah Richards

Sarah is a fibre artist, designer, maker and tutor; based in the Cotswolds. She combines her love of teaching with a passion for natural fibres; and offers workshops that tap into the therapeutic and mindful benefits of creating with wool.

Sarah discovered needle felting over 15 years ago, and is still finding new things to make, and new techniques to try. Felting offers endless opportunities to sculpt, decorate and embellish; and each and every object she or her students create is unique.

Working with fibre usually throws up surprises, is sometimes challenging, but always rewarding. Inspiration comes from the natural world and particularly its colours: as wool takes dye so easily, it is the ‘paint’ on a felter’s palette. The variety offered by this medium is also very pleasing: different fibres give particular effects; with wool locks and curls bringing texture and form to both 2D and 3D pieces.

Sarah loves to combine mixed media elements into her work, sometimes repurposing vintage and recycled materials and fabrics.
