Join experienced printmaker Katy Upton on this half day introduction to lino printing workshop.

In this relaxed and friendly workshop you will learn the basics of linocut printmaking with expert guidance of Katy. The workshop will begin with a talk about the different tools, materials and equipment used for linocut printmaking. Katy will discuss how to safely handle and use the carving tools, as well as carving techniques. You will start by carving with the different tools and experimenting with mark making to gain confidence before working on your chosen design.

With multiple demonstrations from Katy, you will learn how to transfer your design to the lino block. You will the carve your design and ink up the block to print. You will try printing your design, both by hand burnishing and using a press. Katy will have a selection of her linocut prints for you to see, along with some carved lino blocks to help you understand the process.

By the end of the workshop you will have an understanding of the fundamentals of lino print making and be able to print a small single colour edition of your design.

Who is this workshop for?
All skill levels are welcome to attend, but this workshop is aimed at complete beginners – no previous experience necessary. It is also a good refresher, so if like the many people I meet at craft markets and fairs you tried lino printing at school but haven’t done it for a while, why not come and give it a go and get your skills up to scratch!

What you will need:
All tools, materials and equipment will be provided.

Please bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Please bring a couple of sketches/drawings or images you would like to carve and print. We will be working on lino blocks that measure approximately 20x15cm (about A5 size) and we’ll be printing using a single colour, so please bear this in mind when thinking about your designs.

Your work may be too wet to take home. It can be collected from the studio at a later date. If you can, please let us know when you will be collecting so we can be available to unlock the studio.

Accommodation:
Residential option available. Find out about our accommodation, costs and how to book here.

Meet Your Tutor - katy upton

Katy is a printmaker creating original, hand printed linocut prints, cards and gifts. She sketches original designs, transfers them onto lino blocks, carves them by hand and prints them by hand using relief printmaking inks and a press or baren. Katy runs Letters & Lino, working from her garden studio in Gloucestershire and is inspired by the surrounding nature and changing seasons.

Katy has recently begun offering workshops in linocut printmaking for both adults and children, and loves watching people who have stepped nervously into the room having never tried linoprinting walk out with a beautiful edition of prints they are proud of, and a big smile on their face! She is always fascinated by the variety of designs her students create, all using the same medium.
