Join experienced green woodworker Rob for a hands-on introduction to spoon carving and transform a fresh greenwood into your own beautiful and useful wooden cooking spoon.
You'll begin with a piece of freshly cut wood and learn how to read the grain and consider the natural shape of the timber before planning your spoon. Rob will guide you step by step through the traditional process of shaping green wood, showing you how to work safely and confidently with hand tools including an axe and carving knife.
As your spoon begins to take shape, you'll learn how to remove wood carefully and efficiently, refine the handle and carve the bowl. You'll explore traditional green woodworking methods and discover how working with the grain and character of the wood can influence the shape and design of your finished spoon.
With demonstrations and guidance throughout the day, you'll gradually develop your carving skills and experience the satisfaction of creating something entirely by hand. No previous woodcarving or green woodworking experience is needed.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have followed the process from greenwood log to finished spoon and gained an introduction to traditional carving techniques and hand tools. Best of all, you'll leave with your own unique wooden cooking spoon – something beautiful, practical and made by you.
