Join textile artist and experienced tutor, Lichen Davenport, to discover the timeless beauty of Japanese textile art in this hands-on workshop exploring traditional Sashiko stitching.
Suitable for complete beginners and experienced makers alike, this session will guide you through the art of hand-stitching, inspired by Japanese mending traditions, while embracing the sustainable philosophy at the heart of this ancient craft.
You will learn a variety of beautiful authentic stitch patterns, exploring symbolic motifs rich in meaning. These designs can later be developed into future textile art pieces or used to repair and rejuvenate your own garments.
This workshop is perfect for anyone with an interest in textiles, slow stitching, or sustainable making. Whether you are picking up a needle for the first time or already have stitching experience, you will find techniques, inspiration, and ideas to suit your skill level.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Meet Your Tutor - Lichen Davenport
Lichen is a textile designer who graduated with a Distinction in her Master’s in Textiles from Bath Spa University in 2022. After a 20-year career designing textiles and developing trend predictions for the fashion industry, Lichen now focuses on creating unique, individually crafted pieces rooted in sustainable practice.
Motivated by the need to make changes that better support the long-term sustainability of the textiles industry, her work now explores more circular principles, embracing natural dyeing and the use of embroidery stitch as both a decorative and practical means of repair.
