Join experienced artist and tutor Francis Martin on this open studio course to further your still life painting.

In this relaxed, encouraging still life oil painting course you can work on your own projects with friendly tutor support. Whether you bring your own subject or prefer to work from provided still life arrangements, the sessions accommodate both approaches.

During the classes Francis will give guidance and support throughout to help with composition, technique and colour. Basic materials for drawing and oil painting are provided, those wishing to work in other media are welcome to bring materials with them.

Francis will provide an informal, supportive atmosphere suited to all levels — from beginners wanting gentle instruction to more experienced makers seeking focused studio time. Along with individual feedback and demonstrations as required; group advice and shared learning is encouraged. Still life setups will be arranged each week for those who prefer a provided subject.

This course is ideal if you want the freedom to pursue personal projects while benefiting from the expertise and encouragement of a tutor, in a friendly, community-focused space.

Please note that this workshop is for those aged 18 and over.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners and those with experience in drawing still life.

What you will need:
All materials will be provided - easel, oil paints, basic drawing mediums, brushes, palettes and studio safe solvent along with oil painting and cartridge paper. If you have alternative media, your own brushes or wish to paint on a canvas or other paper options, please bring these along.

Please bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy!

Still life arrangements will be set-up. Please bring small objects or reference photos if you plan to work on your own subject.

Please bring something suitable to take your work home in, such as a portfolio to fit up to A2.

You will be required to take all your work home at the end of the course.

MEET YOUR TUTOR - Francis Martin

Francis Martin lives and works in Gloucestershire, his studio within walking distance to the landscape subject matter of his practice. Francis works from observation, on location and alongside landscape, his practice incorporates themes of portraiture and still life -subjects that he regularly teaches in his classes at New Brewery Arts.

As an instructor, Francis specialises in observational painting and drawing, believing that the ability to see well and respond intuitively are paramount to developing skills in the crafts of painting and drawing. His classes are an informal and relaxed environment where students can feel comfortable to learn, practice, take risks and explore creatively.

Francis studied fine art practice and theory at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton before completing a postgraduate scholarship at the Royal Drawing School, London. His paintings and drawings are held in public and private collections across the UK and Europe.
