Join artist Andy Gray on this brand new course to learn the craft of urban sketching around our historical hometown Cirencester.

If you are new to drawing or feel it's time to dust down your sketchbook for a new challenge this 6-week course will explore effective drawing methods for capturing distinctive examples from Cirencester’s historic architecture with a focus upon St John Baptist Church.

Using simple sketching materials and photographic reference provided, you will look at a specific building each week and run through different approaches to drawing allowing you to consider its three-dimensional form, the perspective and tonal range of each view. You will also consider adding people to provide scale and human interest. Some sketching on-site in the church and further afield will allow us to look more closely at some of the buildings, weather permitting.

Drawing allows us to truly engage with the built environment and to analyse a range of architectural styles. Working solely in pencil, this short course will provide an ideal starting point for a renewed exploration of the town.

MEET YOUR TUTOR - andy gray

Andy is passionate about observational drawing and painting. Previously teaching drawing at UWE and the City of Bristol College in Bristol he now works with a variety of clients on both corporate and private commissions and educational projects.

Helping students to develop their own individual styles of expression and tell their own stories, through the exploration and documentation of the visual world, he encourages and guides the way with new techniques and skills.

Specialising in observational drawing and the development of sketchbooks and journals.

Referencing the history of art and design to provide context for the experimental use of materials and composition alongside constructed drawing and perspective the sessions are invariably both fascinating and fun.
