Curious about oil painting but not sure where to begin? Join artist Daisy Embury on this practical workshop, and introduce yourself to the fundamentals of working with oils and help you build the confidence to start painting.
You'll begin by getting to know your materials and exploring how oil paints behave. You'll learn about colour theory and mixing, experiment with different painting techniques, and discover different ways to sketch and prepare your ideas before you begin a painting.
Most of the workshop will be spent painting and putting these techniques into practice. You'll start by experimenting on oil painting paper, giving you the freedom to try out colour mixing, brushwork and different approaches without worrying about creating a finished piece. As your confidence grows, you'll move on to canvas and bring together the skills you've explored.
With demonstrations and guidance throughout, you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, experiment and find an approach that works for you. You'll also learn how to set yourself up to continue oil painting at home and gain a clearer understanding of the materials and equipment you need.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have explored the fundamental techniques of oil painting, developed your confidence with the medium and created work on both paper and canvas. You'll leave with the skills and knowledge to continue experimenting with oils independently or take your painting further.
This workshop is perfect for complete beginners, anyone curious about trying oil paints, or painters who would like to return to the fundamentals and refresh their skills.

Meet Your Tutor - daisy embury
Daisy is a Fine Artist and Oil Painter, in awe of the beauty and fragility of our world.
She has been oil painting since the age of twelve, with her subject matter dancing between both humans and nature. Over the past few years, her oil paintings have brought the two together as one. Through botanicals, Daisy transforms personal and shared human experiences into art, bridging the gap in our relationship with nature. Her work captures the beauty within fragility, while shining a light on the intricate details we so often overlook.
Daisy has lived in different places and countries, each shaping both her personal and creative growth. During her time at university in London, her deep fascination with the craftsmanship of old Renaissance paintings briefly led her to study at the Florence Academy of Art. She later spent three and a half years in beautiful New Zealand, taking on commissions as she travelled and exploring new curiosities within its breathtaking nature and culture.
She then became a Personalisation Expert and Artist for Louis Vuitton in Melbourne, where she was brought back in touch with her creativity and began giving life to ideas of her own. It was during this time that many of her creative ideas were first born.
Now back in her birth country, the United Kingdom, Daisy is working to bring these ideas to life through her art.
Through her work, she hopes that viewers see their own intrinsic beauty, fragility, and humanity reflected back at them, creating a moment to pause, nurture, and appreciate all that makes them who they are.
