Join jeweller Fiona Dowling on this day workshop to learn how to make a sea glass silver bangle

At this workshop you will learn how to make a silver bangle or cuff set with sea glass. Fiona will teach you the fundamentals of silversmithing to enable you create up to 3 finished pieces. You will learn how to saw, solder, file, hammer, hand-stamp, texture and finish your own silver bangles or cuffs with sea glass and have the option of hand stamping to create a bangle.

You will have the choice to use 2mm and 3mm silver wire as well a thin cuffs. Once you have selected your silver wire, you will begin by marking the wire to create a bangle made to fit you. Fiona will show you how to saw and file before you move on to forming and hammering to create curvature and texture. Fiona will then show you how soldering for joins and basic safety with the torch. You will making a bezel setting from scratch to secure the sea glass onto your bangle. You will then be shown finishing and polishing techniques to ensure your piece is finished professionally.

Throughout the day you will be given expert tuition from Fiona Dowling to ensure the correct use of tools and techniques. Your main focus will be to create one bangle made to fit you then use the remaining time to make additional pieces or practice techniques.

You will leave this workshop with fundamental silversmithing skills and have a bespoke, finished bangle or cuff hand crafted by you.

Please note, this workshop is for those aged 18 and over.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Who is this workshop for?
Beginners and those with some jewellery experience who want to learn traditional silversmithing skills in a relaxed small-group setting.

What you will need:
Please bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Please remove jewellery and tie hair back.

All tools are provided.

The cost of the silver and stones are not included in the workshop cost. The approximate cost of these materials is £60- £120 and payable to the tutor on the day.

You are welcome to bring your own sea glass or sea pottery but please be aware not all pieces will be suitable to set.

Meet Your Tutor - Fiona Dowling

Fiona has 20 years of experience in the Jewellery Industry, a BA from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA from the Royal College of Art, London.

After years of making jewellery on her own, Fiona now loves making as part of a group and passing her skills on to others.  She says “It’s all about gathering together and feeling really satisfied with what you have created - where the experience is as precious the jewellery you’ve made.It’s amazing to see what can be created with a basic set of tools and some guidance.”
