Join Sophie Bowen to explore the creative possibilities of natural dyes.
In this one day workshop, you will be introduced to the world of natural dyes and learn how we can create many beautiful colours from different plants and food waste found around us. You will be shown how a dye bath is made, and together we will dye a selection of silk and wool fibres that you can take home with you to use in future creative projects.
Sophie will also share some of her own creative process in embroidery and drawing with inks to inspire you, and there will be an opportunity to have a play with some pre-dyed yarn and natural inks in the session.
You will come away with an understanding for natural dye methods, your own selection of naturally dyed mini skeins suitable for embroidery, crochet or knitting, as well as a sample experiment created by you alongside Sophie and the group.
This beginner friendly class is aimed to encourage you to be inspired to create freely.

Meet Your Tutor - Sophie bowen
Sophie Bowen is a textile artist from Somerset whose practice brings together natural dyes, drawing and hand stitch. She studied BA Drawing at Falmouth University and later completed an MA in Textiles at Bath Spa University.
Her work is a contemplation on nature, shaped by observing seasonal shifts, patterns of regrowth, irregularity and impermanence. This is intertwined with a process-led approach to making that embraces slowness, allowing materials to guide each piece as it unfolds.
Drawing sits at the heart of her practice. She uses mark-making as an intuitive way to explore movement and flow, with marks initially made using brush and ink later translated through a range of textile processes.
Sophie runs workshops sharing her processes in natural dyeing, drawing and hand embroidery.
