This brand new course will teach you the art of still life painting in oils.

From bold beginnings and designing compelling and harmonious arrangements, to developing your own unique visual language, Francis Martin’s process driven approach will guide you through the fundamentals of both oil painting and making the most from the ‘captive’ subject.

Each week a new subject matter or theme will be introduced alongside practical tuition to help each student realise their picture-making ambitions. The course will include instruction for an array of still life painting ideas, including capturing a light effect, getting the most out of colour, and conjuring both space and from.

Francis will lead the sessions with live demonstrations, theory explanations, and one to one guidance. His classes are known for being a relaxed environment where students are free to explore creatively away from judgment and with expert advice.

Francis is an experienced artist and tutor whose own still life paintings have been exhibited at various galleries including the Mall Galleries and The Royal Overseas League, London.

Please note that this workshop is for those aged 18 and over.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners and those with experience in oil painting.

What you will need:
All materials will be provided.

Please bring something suitable to take your work home in, such as a portfolio to fit up to A2.

You will be required to take all your work home at the end of the course.

MEET YOUR TUTOR - Francis Martin

Francis Martin’s work explores the light emulating effects of charcoal graphite and oil paint. Working from life and before the motif he aims to convey a personal response to his environment and the world around him. As a result his practice encompasses a broad variety of ideas and subject matter, including portraiture, landscape, life-drawing, still life and interiors.

Graduating with a BA in Fine art Practice and theory from Winchester school of art in 2009, Francis went on to study on a postgraduate Scholarship at the Royal Drawing School. He exhibits widely and has undertaken residencies in the UK and Italy.
