Join enamel artist Katie Sanderson on this day workshop to learn the ancient craft of kiln fired enamelling on copper.

In this workshop Katie will teach you the fundamentals of kiln fired enamelling. These will be broken down and taught with multiple demonstrations and one-to-one guidance. You will learn traditional techniques and create your own colourful, glassy enamel pieces on copper — perfect for jewellery, small decorative objects or unique keepsakes.

Over the course of the day, you will learn about enamelling materials, tools and safety. You will learn how to prepare the copper, apply enamel using dry-sifting, wet-packing and painting techniques as well as learning about colour mixing. You will be shown how to fire your work in the kiln: understanding temperature, hold times and cooling. You will then learn the finishing techniques; polishing, trimming and setting your enamel work ready to take home.

You will leave this workshop with a broader understanding of the skills needed to create your own unique kiln fired enamel pieces.  You will have explored colour, surface and shine while making something truly handmade to treasure.

Meet Your Tutor - katie sanderson

Katie was first introduced to enamelling by her mother 15 years ago, herself an enamel artist. Katie went on to learn from her mother, before going on to explore this magical art form further, creating work that takes enamelling beyond its traditional methods.

Based in the Forest of Dean Katie Sanderson is an experienced enamel artist. Over the last 15 years she has honed her skills producing unique and bespoke work for many clients and galleries.

Enamelling is an ancient craft, and once Katie mastered some of it’s techniques she used more experimental methods to establish her own area of enamelling. Katie now specialises in turning any sketched idea into a piece of enamel work. Katie’s customers know that anything is possible; if she can draw it, she can enamel it! In recent years Katie has found great pleasure in sharing her experience in teaching this versatile and addictive craft.
