Discover the heritage craft of broom making and weave your own beautiful and practical hand brooms in this immersive full-day workshop.

Working in a small group, you'll receive plenty of individual guidance as you learn the traditional techniques used to make handcrafted brooms and brushes – a pre-industrial heritage craft that relies entirely on hand skills, with no machinery or electricity.

You'll begin by exploring the materials used in broom making, learning how to prepare and handle natural fibres before selecting the shape of your broom and the colour of your binding twine. Guided step by step, you'll master the techniques of bundle construction and binding as your handmade brushes begin to take shape.

Throughout the day, Jamie will share the history and folklore of broom making, along with insights into traditional UK materials and the enduring appeal of this mindful and deeply satisfying craft. As you work, you'll discover the rhythm of broom making and the connection that comes from creating functional objects entirely by hand.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have made at least one hand broom, a set of kitchen brushes and a pet brush to take home. Perfect for artist studios, potting sheds, kitchens, vehicles or caring for pets, your handmade brushes are designed to be both beautiful and useful.

Suitable for complete beginners and those with some previous experience who would like to refine their technique. Numbers are kept low to ensure plenty of individual tuition.

Please note: Broom making is a surprisingly physical craft requiring strength and dexterity in both the hands and feet. You'll be engaging your core, arms, hands, legs and back throughout the day, so be prepared for a rewarding creative workout.

Meet Your Tutor - Jamie Dun

Jamie Dunn is a Bristol-based, self-taught broom maker and the founder of Bristol Broomworks. Working from a barn studio on a flower farm in Somerset, Jamie handcrafts heirloom-quality brooms and brushes using traditional, pre-industrial techniques inspired by European, Shaker and Appalachian broom-making traditions. Every broom is made by hand, without electricity or machinery, celebrating the beauty of slow craft and sustainable materials.

Jamie is passionate about preserving and sharing this critically endangered heritage craft, teaching workshops at galleries, museums, historic venues and craft festivals across the UK. She is a member of Heritage Crafts and The Land Art Collective, and her work has been recognised by Country Living magazine, which named her one of its 40 Best Artisans.

Jamie loves introducing people to the satisfying rhythm of broom making, encouraging them to slow down, work with natural materials and discover the joy of creating beautiful, functional objects by hand. Her workshops are welcoming, practical and suitable for complete beginners, combining traditional skills with a contemporary appreciation of craftsmanship and sustainability.
