Join ceramicist Pascale Wilson on this day workshop to hand-build and decorate a candle holder.

You'll begin by learning the fundamentals of slab building, rolling and constructing clay to create a candlestick holder designed to fit a standard candle. Pascale will guide you through the building process, with plenty of opportunity to personalise your design and add details such as handles or other decorative features.

Once your candlestick holder is built, you'll turn your attention to colour and pattern. Using coloured slips and sgraffito techniques, you'll decorate the surface of your piece, scratching through layers of colour to create bold patterns, lines and details.

By the end of the day, you'll have created a unique ceramic candlestick holder and gained an understanding of slab building, coloured slips and sgraffito decoration.

Your finished piece will be glazed and fired for you in our electric kilns at New Brewery Arts and will be ready to collect at a later date. Please allow up to six weeks for firing.

Meet Your Tutor - PASCALE WILSON

Pascale is a Bristol based ceramicist who loves to create character-rich artworks. She combines simple forms with faces, patterns and bold colours to spark narratives.

Handbuilding is a slow and freeform production method, allowing her to organically discover characters while making. Her work is reminiscent of Pre-Columbian art, using repeated patterns, animal and human forms, and an intrinsic playfulness, inspiring a sense of myth and curiosity.

Her interest in psychological states, dreams, and our collective mental landscape underpins her work, driving her to seek understanding through making.

Pascale has been teaching ceramics in Bristol for 5 years, and is passionate about sharing her knowledge. She feels clay is an accessible medium to anyone, whether they deem themselves to be creative or not, and loves to help people realise their ideas.

Her sessions cover fundamental handbuilding and decorating skills, while providing the scope for individual style and creativity within each project.
