Join experienced stained glass artist and tutor Daniella Wilson-Dunne to learn the craft of stained glass.
During this course Daniella will teach you the fundamental stained glass techniques. You will learn how to cut glass accurately, apply copper foil and lead came, solder joints, and finish panels. Sessions cover design development, glass selection, pattern making and framing. The course balances technical tuition with creative projects, enabling you to complete a finished panel by the end of the term.
Daniella will teach you how to safely use specialist equipment including grinders and soldering irons, and provide step‑by‑step demonstrations, one‑to‑one guidance and advice on developing your own practice.
Over the 12 weeks you will learn:
Health and safety in the glass studio: safe handling, PPE, and workshop etiquette.
Glass types and properties: flashed, cathedral, opal and textured glass; choosing appropriate glass for a design.
Pattern making: drawing, full‑size cartoons and transfer techniques.
Cutting and grinding: accurate straight and curved cutting; using grinders to refine edges.
Foiling method: applying copper foil to individual pieces and preparing for soldering.
Lead came method: cutting and assembling came, and finishing joints.
Soldering: safe soldering practice, creating neat joints and using flux.
Cementing and waterproofing: using cement and polishing for durability.
Design development: colour, composition and working with light; adapting imagery for stained glass.
You will leave this course having gained practical skills to make a stained glass art and have a completed piece to take home.
