Join ceramic artist, Rhi Jarman for a hands-on introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel.

Over this 6-week short course, you will learn the fundamental skills of this ancient craft. From centering clay and pulling up the walls, to refining and trimming your forms, Rhi will provide guided support to find approaches and techniques that work best for you in an explorative and fun environment. You will learn to shape a range of forms such as tumblers and bowls.

You will learn how to finish your pieces with surface decoration and glazing. You will choose 6 pieces to be stoneware fired in our electric kilns.

Week 1: Introduction, throwing basics, centering and making cylinders

Week 2: Wedging and throwing bowls

Week 3: Re-centering and trimming to refine shape/add foot rings

Week 4: Shaping techniques – spouts/collaring in/bellying out. Optional decoration with coloured slip

Week 5: Trimming remaining work. Optional faceting or decoration with coloured slip

Week 6: Glaze intro, health and safety, dipping and pouring, fettling

Please note that this workshop is for those aged 18 and over.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Who is this class for?

The course is suitable for complete beginners, or for those with some basic wheel throwing experience.

What you will need:

All materials and tools are included.

Please bring an apron, a hand towel, and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! Clay and glaze will wash out of clothes.

Please remove jewellery/watches and tie long hair back. We suggest trimming long nails for ease.

Firings are included in the price of this course. Firings can take up to 6 weeks, you will be contacted as soon as your work is ready. Please collect and take it home as soon as possible.

Rhi is a creator of unique sculptural ceramics, decorative homewares and wearable art. She is inspired by the fauna, flora and fungi that play vital roles in balancing natural ecosystems.

Rhi uses a combination of hand-building, sculpting, and wheel-throwing techniques.
