Join textiles artist Julie Hicks on this day workshop to learn how to weave a decorative, tactile wall hanging.
In this workshop you will begin by preparing a simple frame loom so it’s ready for weaving, Julie will demonstrate how to warp the loom and position your base threads to give a sturdy foundation.
Next you’ll learn a range of texture-building techniques, including Rya knots and looped rya for shaggy, plush areas, Soumak braid for raised, braided lines and shaping, and Egyptian knots to create dense, patterned sections. These techniques can be combined to create contrast in texture, rhythm and pattern across your piece. Julie will show examples and give guidance on yarn choice, colour placement and tension so your weave sits well on the frame.
Finally, you’ll be shown how to finish your work: how to secure the final weft, remove the piece from the loom safely, add a dowel, and prepare the hanging. Then you will trim, shape and tidy any loose ends so the piece looks polished and ready to display.
You will leave this workshop with a tactile and creative wall hanging, and fundamental weaving skills that will enable you to continue your weaving journey.
