Join ceramic artist, Rhi Jarman for this 3-day immersive workshop to learn and practise wheel throwing on the pottery wheel.

This summer school is designed for complete beginners and those in the earlier stages of their throwing journey. Whether you’re new to the wheel and keen to learn the fundamentals, or an improver looking to refine skills through recap, repetition, and guided practice, the workshop is adaptable to different experience levels and individual interests.

Rhi will demonstrate the fundamental processes of wheel-throwing, including centering clay, throwing cylinders and bowls, and refining and trimming forms. There will also be opportunities to explore pulling and attaching handles, faceting, carving and coloured slip decoration. You can work at your own pace, or on your own project ideas if preferred, with plenty of individual support and guidance throughout.

Over the 3 days you will cover:

Day 1 - Centering, throwing cylinders, wedging (preparing) clay

Day 2 - Throwing bowls and/or other forms, trimming

Day 3 - Trimming remaining work; optional handle pulling, faceting or coloured slip decoration

The workshop content is flexible depending on student skill level and areas of interest.

At the end of the workshop, you may select 2 favourite pieces to be glazed in either white or transparent glaze. These will be and stoneware fired in our electric kilns following the workshop. You will leave this workshop with a deepened understanding and skill set for all things wheel throwing and be equipment with solid fundamentals to continue your creative journey with clay.

Please note that this workshop is for those aged 18 and over.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

Who is this workshop for?
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners, or for novice or intermediate potters to practise techniques.

What you will need:
Please bring an apron or wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! Clay will wash out of clothes.

Please remove jewellery/watches and tie long hair back. We suggest trimming long nails for ease.

All materials and firings are included, 2 pieces of work will be fired with a transparent glaze.

Firings take up to 6 weeks from the date of the workshop, you will be contacted as soon as your work is ready. Please collect and take it home as soon as possible.

Meet Your Tutor - Rhi Jarman

Rhi is a creator of unique sculptural ceramics, decorative homewares and wearable art. She is inspired by the fauna, flora and fungi that play vital roles in balancing natural ecosystems.

Rhi uses a combination of hand-building, sculpting, and wheel-throwing techniques.
